    Abstract
The title of this thesis contains a reference to one of the 900 theses of the renaissance philosopher Giovanni Pico della Mirandola but there it says: „In Christo fuerunt duo esse“. Pico wanted to reconcile all sciences, religions, and the philosophy of the ancients and of the middle ages, christian faith and islam, and the jewish faith, religious secret orders and magic. He saw dualism or pluralism in most of the factors that he examined, and he considered that much of that would be based on secret threads that needed to be pursued further and analysed so that a comprehensive reconciliation would appear.
In the thesis an attempt is made to prove that in three travel books by the author Thor Vilhjálmsson, Undir gervitungli, Regn á rykið and Svipir dagsins, og nótt it is possible to discern a will to reconciliate religious and aesthetical opposites. It is maintained that the texts of these travel books are full of dualistic ideas and mysticism that can be traced back for many centuries and steems from both philosophy and theology. It is pointed out that in the writings of Thor, there is an obvious idea about, or a faith in, something higher that is beyond human existence - a kind of God figure. It is denied that Thor is an atheistic existentialist, but pointed out that his humanism and his capabilities for emphathy have roots in The Christian heritage for instance with Franz of Assisi and Erasmus from Rotterdam.
In order to reveal this dualism and mysticism, these books are read with reference to the writings of Walter Benjamin concerning the concept of history, language, messianism and the aura. Then the texts of Thor shall be interpreted in the view of dualism and mysticism from the days of Plato and from there threads are traced on gnosticism and newplatonism. Ideas of different thinkers such as Pico della Mirandola, Emanuel Swedenborg, Éduard Schuré, Søren Kierkegaard, Martin Heidegger and Karl Rahner, will be explored in the endevour to reveal and explain the abovementioned dualism and mysticism.
