The first part of this study, submitted for the completion of a M.A. degree in Translation Studies from the University of Iceland, addresses the importance of language-skills and translations for indigenous communities in Guatemala, where 21 different Mayan languages are spoken opposed to Spanish as the country’s only official language. The latter part consists of an Icelandic translation of selected chapters of a book-long testimony by the Guatemalan indigenous woman, Rigoberta Menchú, titled: Ég heiti Rigoberta Menchú og svona varð sjálfsvitund mín til. In her testimony Rigoberta tells her personal story, the history of her Mayan community as well as sharing information about her people’s traditions and cultural practices. Simultaneously, she describes the horrendous confrontations that occurred between the Guatemalan army and various guerrilla movements during the Civil War in Guatemala and the near holocaust of indigenous communities.
The study theoretically discusses the historical importance of powerful widely spread languages, like Spanish and English, for the dissemination of information, in this case Menchú’s testimony (s. testimonio). Furthermore, it investigates and attests to the importance of translations as an indispensable tool to promote Menchú´s account of common people´s experience and suffering during the conflict. Likewise, it demonstrates how her cause gained worldwide attention by means of her acquisition of languages and the translations of her text. Special attention is paid to the privileged position of Spanish over the many Indian languages in Guatemala and how this is reflected in Spanish-speakers political and cultural dominance in the country. It demonstrates how this advantage has prevailed in the country ever since it´s settlement in the 15th century and has contributed to the existence of a great divide existing between different local ethnicities.
The proper translation process of Rigoberta´s testimony is then analyzed with the assistance of recent theories of translations, where special attention is dedicated to studies on translation of texts from “exotic” cultures and languages. As repeatedly observed the translation of such texts is a demanding task and it depends largely on the will and skills of the translator how much he or she prefers to represent the “exotic” or “strange” culture into the translated version.
The thesis therefore, as discussed, analyzed and supported with arguments, confirms that augmented communications and fusion of different cultures (s. transculturación) lends a voice to the former voiceless with the help of powerful wide-spread languages, such as Spanish and English, and by means of translation. Thus, Rigoberta´s testimony has finally reached Icelandic readership, thanks to these important instruments.
