This thesis concerns the translation of the novel "Herra Alheimur" by the Icelandic writer Hallgrímur Helgason and it gives an account of the theoretical approach to the translation along with an account of the translation itself. The translation of the novel was predicated on Katharina Reiss's functional model of translation, for which she laid the groundwork in her seminal book Translation Criticism: Potential and Limitations published in 1970. In the book Katharina Reiss advocates an approach to translation and translation criticism that builds upon Karl Bühler's organon-model of language. Reiss's model dictates that a translator must begin by analyzing a source text to discover its dominant quality and once this attribute been ascertained, the translator is to foreground said quality in the target text. This thesis maintains that the novel "Herra Alheimur" is to be classified as "form-focused" according to the model's tripartite division of texts and this in turn has a marked effect on the translation itself. Considering the vagueness of Reiss's definition of "form" within her model, this thesis attempts to elaborate upon the term leading the author to deduce that what Reiss actually means by the word "form" is in fact a combination of the author's style (word order, punctuation, sentence parts and sentence length) lexicon and use of literary devices. This particularization of the term is for the most part influenced by Burton Raffel's "The Art of Translating Prose" along with a few other texts. Next, a couple of general principles are adopted and the translation of the novel is undertaken according to the prescripts of Reiss's model. Finally, the thesis briefly discusses some of the difficulties faced during the translation and it concludes with an evaluation of the translation along with an evaluation of the functional model itself.
