Titill:
  • Útinám og útikennsla 5-6 ára barna : hugmyndir að útikennslu
Námsstig:
  • Meistara

This masters dissertation deals with outdoor learning for young children at the primary level and those in their last year of preschool. The dissertation is divided into two parts; on the one hand, there is a collection of tasks intended for teachers who are working with young pupils, and, on the other hand, a theoretical exposition outlining the pedagogical areas of emphasis on which the projects are based. The aim of the dissertation is to shed some light on the importance of outdoor teaching in the schooling of young children. The theoretical exposition covers features and values of outdoor learning and relevant areas of emphasis in preschool and primary school curricula, including a discussion of theories of study relating to young children. The learning theories of Jean Piaget, Lev Vygotsky and John Dewey are discussed and the ideas inspired and support, the ideas on which the tasks in the collection are based. Outdoor education provides children with a direct experience of their external surroundings in play and learning and this form of teaching stimulates children’s emotional awareness. Preschool fields of study and primary school subjects are investigated, focusing on shared areas of emphasis in the curricula of those two school levels. The dissertation refers to research findings and development projects with regard to the value of outdoor learning and as to whether this form of teaching is a realistic option in young children´s study programmes. Research has indicated that outdoor learning strengthens children´s mobility skills as well as their intellectual and social development, thus contributing to successful learning and improved health. The collection contains ideas of outdoor tasks suitable for children at the age level of 5–6 years, and which may be directly utilised in teaching.
Attempts are made to relate the tasks to all fields of study within the preschool as well as to most primary subjects, with the aim of integration in mind. The objectives of the tasks is to strengthen children’s knowledge, experience and interest with regard to nature and the environment in general, by attracting their attention to special aspects of their close 8 environment, with their experience and interest always in the foreground.
The tasks were designed with certain locations in mind, but can easily be adapted to other circumstances
