Titill:

Iceland is a volcanic island in the N-Atlantic ocean positioned on the edge of a spreading ridge that separates the N-American plate and the Eurasian plate. Beneath Iceland there is also a mantle plume which makes it a hot spot. Many volcanoes in Iceland are covered by ice caps. The pressure that a glacier exerts has great effect on volatile solubility in magmas and as the pressure increases the solubility increases as well. When magma comes up to the surface under a thick glacier it quenches and pillows form. Volatiles cannot separate from the magma as it quenches and they become a part of the pillows. Therefore volatiles contain information about the pressure above the conduit when the pillows were formed. In turn it is possible to interpret the thickness of a glacier or the depth of a lake under which eruption took place.

Samples were taken from the glassy rims of pillow lava at Þórisvatn, Bolaalda, Kleifarvatn and from two mines at Sveifluháls. Water content of the samples was measured using Fourier infra-red spectroscopy, chemical analysis were done and pressure and ice thickness calculated with appropriate programs. Two samples, from Kleifarvatn and from the first mine (Undirhlíðar) at Sveifluháls, contained significant amount of water or up to ~0.39wt% which corresponds to a glacier thickness of 130m. The glacier which covered Reykjanes during the last ice age is thought to have been 70-400m thick, so the result of this project are within these limits. The sample from Þórisvatn contained 0.3wt% of water which corresponds to a 75m thick ice cover. During the last ice age the glacier at the center of Iceland was 1000-1500m thick and therefore it is unlikely that the magma that formed the pillows came up under the glacier. The other samples contained little water or about ~0.08-0.26wt% which is equivalent to a 0-55m thick glacier. Pillows form under more pressure and therefore it is unlikely that the pillows of Bolaalda and the later mine of Sveifluháls had erupted under a glacier.
