Research has shown that the education and social standing of parents has a significant impact on children’s health. There are indications that class difference has increased in Iceland. The purpose of this literature review is to examine the current status of research into the impact of psycho-social factors on infant health and the role of nurses in giving families in need counseling and support. Information was collected from peer-reviewed articles and public records. The results indicate that children of parents from lower classes of society often have health problems and that the education and income level of the parents are the main indicating factors for these problems. These children are also more likely to suffer from low birth-weight, asthma, respiratory diseases, obesity and there is an increased risk of emotional and cognitive development disruption. In light of these findings assessment of expectant parents’ circumstances is proposed during pregnancy and thus easier to find the families which have psycho-social problems and give them the right support. Nurses are in a unique position to screen for and asses the condition and situation of families because of their proximity to the community and knowledge of healthcare and preventative measures. In order to accomplish this, healthcare professionals need to get more training about the importance of psycho-social determinants on children’s health, and effective methods to counter them. At the same time research in the field as well as policy formulation and the systematic organization of support for those families at risk needs to be increased.
