The purpose of this report was to familiarize the public and the health care specialists on the subject of EDS. We will attempt to answer the questions: What influence does EDS have on a pregnant woman, and what are the possible influences on the families involved in cronic illness. EDS is the name of a group of inherited connective tissue disorders. Where the specific defect is in the production of collagen in the body. Collagens are the protiens that give the connective tissues their elasticity and strength. This defect in the production of collagen results in the connective tissues becoming weak stretching out and can easily tear apart. EDS is most often inherited, for example, if one parent has the disease there is a 50% chance of the child inheriting it. The instances of EDS is estimated at 1 in 5,000 – 10,000 and this is including all of the different types. This report is a complimation of our research from many sources or databases, where we found articles and research done on EDS. The results of which show that the patients with EDS live with many compromises to their health and well being. The worst types of EDS can even lead to an early death. Women with EDS are faced with many problems during pregnancies. The influences from EDS during pregnancy range from discomfort to life threatning symptoms. EDS has a large influence on the entire family of the patient, which is why the family also needs support, because much can change within the family when one is diagnosed with EDS. Our conclusion is that if the medical staff and the public were aware of the existence of this disease. Then it could be identified earlier and then the patients and thera families could get the help and support that they need.
The key issues in this report are: Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, pregnancy, birth, family and chronic illness.
