Transgender people are a minority group that meet prejudice and even discrimination in their everyday life. That can have serious consequences such as low self-esteem, social isolation, depression, anxiety and a higher suicide risk. There is evidence that tolerance towards transgender people is better today than it has been over the past years but little has been researched or written about attitudes towards transgender people here in Iceland. Many researches on attitudes towards transgender people have been implemented wide over the world but since no research has been performed here in Iceland it was about time to do so. The participants in this research were college students at the University of Akureyri, 679 students answered a questionnaire with 26 questions. The results showed that majority of college students have positive attitudes towards transgender people. The opinion was that transgender people should have the right to undergo hormonal treatment and sex reassignment surgery. They should have the same right as others to get married, adopt a child and to work with children. Most of the participants were also positive towards their right to change their names and identity. Not many participants were sure they could have a transgender individual as a partner although most of them were ready to be friends with them and even more could accept having them as a fellow worker. It was expected that men had more negative attitudes towards transgender people than women and those who consider that transsexualism is caused by a psychological factor rather than a biological factor had more negative attitudes, which turned out to be true. The attitudes of upcoming health care staff and upcoming teachers were not more positive in comparison to other students as was expected.
