Descriptive words, most often named after classifiers or proforms, are a very interesting phenomena. Like other words in a signed language they are made of a handshape, an orientation, a movement, a place of articulation, and non-manuals, but usually it is the handshape which is called a classifier or a proform in these particular words.
In a descriptive word all the formation variables (handshape, orientation, movement, place of articulation and non-manual) can be analyzed as bearing meaning, where each variable equals a quality of its referent, i.e. what it stands for (e.g. handshape=shape). If it follows that they are morphemes it causes sign languages to have a double morphology, on the one hand a limited sequental affixal one with few discernable morphemes, and on the other a very fertile simultaneous one, where a multitude of variables are arranged together very freely.
The real meaning of the descriptive word form seems to be some attribute of the referent, such as shape. Because ambiguity is not found in these words, they can only be used to describe concrete concepts, and their handshape can only signify a real attribute of their referent, the conclusion will be drawn that their purpose is rather to describe than to classify. The form of a descriptive word is much more reminicent of a different phenomena found in spoken languages called sound symbolism, but that is when a certain sound or a sound cluster assumes the role of standing for certain meanings. These sound symbolic variables are smaller than morphemes and have a connection to the visual form.
Two things need to be kept in mind here. On the one hand that such word formation is alive in spoken languages, even though it can not be considered very productive, and on the other that this is a scale of degree from the arbitrary to the transparent form. The descriptive word, spoken as well as signed, has a phonological form, where the variables arrange themselves into certain positions depending on their purpose, which later on can take the form of root and affix.
Due to effects from perception, culture and the phonological systems of the languages themselves, each sound- or image-symbolic system becomes unique. There is always a degree of arbitrariness to the descriptive and vice versa, but all possibilities are utilized from ordered (arbitrary) variables to arbitrary (ordered) variables.
