Background: Theories of bonding and attachment between parents and infants have been shaped by the theories of John Bowlby’s . Attachment between parents and children begins at the birth of the child and continues throughout life. (Attachment is depended on circumstances and individuals.) The relationship between father and his newborn starts differently than the relationship between the mother and her newborn. For the attachment between parents and children to be successful, the conditions and circumstance have to be right.
Aim: To explore how fathers experience the attachment with the infant or pre-term infant, and the transition to fatherhood for the first four years of the children’s life. Is there a difference between fathers who had children in the NICU and fathers from the maternity unit and the Nest.
Method: A prospective longitudinal descriptive was used. A total of 63 (N=63) fathers participated, 23 fathers from the NICU, 15 fathers from the maternity unit and 25 fathers from the Nest. Three periods in the child’s life were compared, one week after birth, six weeks after birth and when the child was around 3-4 years of age.
Results: Attachment between father and child in the groups changed in the same way over the period. The attachment strengthened during the first 6 weeks, but the relationship deteriorated when the child was 3 - 4-year. Transition to fatherhood between the groups where the same during each period. At 6 weeks from the birth, fathers experience a lesser transition to fatherhood compared to a week after birth. The fathers transition becomes stronger as the child gets older and reaches 3 - 4 years of age. The difference in attachment and transition to fatherhood was not significant between groups in any of the periods.
Conclusion: The results suggest that the presence of fathers to their children when they are infants, supports the attachment and their transition to fatherhood. Fathers need adjustment and support to continue to grow in their role. Nurses are the ideal person in providing support and education to fathers so they feel more secure about their attachment and transition to fatherhood.
Key words: Fathers, attachment, bonding, preterm, infant, transition to fatherhood
