Growing up with behavioral or emotional disorders can be very limiting in various ways. These problems can have an impact on the educational level and cause difficult social problems. Oppositional and defiant disorder is a relatively common behavioral disorder defined by irritability, aggression and vindictiveness. Conduct disorder is usually a more serious disorder with severe symptoms sometimes resembling antisocial behavior. In Iceland, behavioral checklists based on symptoms have been the most common method for gathering information on psychological problems. Most commonly these checklists have negatively phrased statements seeking abnormal behavior. A new instrument has been in development in Iceland over the last few years. This instrument is a rating list combined of positively formulated items gathering information on children’s normal behavior where aberrations would appear as an extreme value on a continuum. Asking for normal behavior rather than abnormal we strive to prevent some of the errors that have been problematic for behavioral checklists. The aim of this research is to improve the construct validity of this instrument using factor analysis on a 72 item checklist and comparing it to the factor structure of an older instrument, The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), as well as the DSM-4 criteria for oppositional and defiant disorder. The sample of this study consisted of 335 mothers of 6-13 year old children. The questionnaire was sent electronically through Mentor which is the system teachers and the school board use to contact parents in Icelandic elementary schools. The results show that the list consists of three clear factors with reliability between 0,87 and 0,97 and a fourth factor with reliability below 0,45. All four factors are linked to at least one of the three developmental areas: emotional, social or moral development. The factors showed moderate correlation with similar factors in the SDQ checklist. The results support the idea that it is possible to access behavioral and emotional disorders on a spectrum where aberrations appear as extremes and not only categorically.
