Occupational Therapy Education at the University of Akureyri
    - View of Students and Professionals -
The Occupational Therapy Program at the University of Akureyri strives to provide students with a high quality education. On completing courses, students are expected to be independent and competent professionals with strong professional identity. The purpose of this research was to investigate the students’ and newly educated occupational therapists´ opinions of the education and how well they felt prepared for their professional careers. The following questions were presented: 1) What is the view of 3rd and 4th year students of the current Occupational Therapy education program at the University of Akureyri?, 2) What is the view of occupational therapists who graduated 12 to 36 months ago of the educational program? and 3) How do graduates who completed the education 12 – 36 months ago regard their professional competence and participation? This research project uses a quantitative approach with the Canadian Model of Occupational Performance and Engagement (CMOP-E) as a framework. Data was acquired through questionnaires presented in an online survey. The population of the research included all the current 3rd and 4th year students and occupational therapists who graduated between 12 – 36 months ago. Of the 65 questionnaires distributed, 47 achieved a response. The majority of students found the education to be challenging, varied and interesting. In general, students were pleased with the structure of the education, but some showed dissatisfaction with the practical side. Most students thought that the education approached the role of the Occupational Therapist and the needs of society. The majority of the graduates found that the course had prepared them well, with an adequate level of professional competence and identity. For most, however, it took 6 – 12 months to achieve competence in the work environment and for some this took over a year.
Key terms: Occupational therapy education, Professionalism, Professional competence, Professional engagement.
