  • Árið 1991 tóku þrjár alþjóðlegar stofnanir í Evrópu höndum saman og stofnuðu verkefnið Heilsueflandi skóli sem er umfjöllunarefni ritgerðarinnar. Þessar stofnanir voru; WHO, Evrópuráðið og EB.

This thesis is focusing on ENHPS – European Network of Healthy Promoting Schools. It was founded in 1991 by three international agencies in Europe: WHO Regional Office for Europe, Council of Europe and European Commission. That network is coordinated by CBO, as a WHO Collaborating Centre for Schools Health Promotion. They focus on making school health promotion an integral part of policy development in the European education and health sectors. The main focus in the beginning was on children’s and teenager´s mental health along with other health issues. The goal was to increase awareness and interest by teachers and students in health promotion with the emphasis on collaboration with parents and the local community.
In Iceland there are 57 schools participating in ENHPS and the aim is to make the school community with its employees, students, parents and local community working together to make a holistic strategy on health promotion. The strategy should be intertwined with all aspects of the school community on a long term basis because every link in the school community is important to health and well-being of students and staff.
This thesis will explain what European Network of Healthy Promoting Schools is, its goals, policies and what is essential for health promotion in primary schools. Also the origin of the project in Europe and how it is run in Iceland. Directorate of Health in Iceland has published a manual based on eight focus elements: local community, students, homes, physical activity and safety, healthy diet and dental health, staff, life skills and mental health. Each part of the manual follows the criteria and in the criteria is highlighted emphasis of each part. In every part there is a Checklist that can be used for registration of the current status and priorities for each item separately.
Recent studies have been done to examine the health and wellbeing of children and young people with the aim to benefit the ENHPS project. Finally, how the project is consistent with the new National Curriculum for primary schools which focuses on the health and welfare of students. It is important that everyone in the school community, parents and the local community work together in preventive work because every link in the chain is important to the health and welfare of students and staff.
