Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD is a neurological disorder that consists of problems with inattention, hyperactivity and impulse control. ADHD is one of the most common behavioral problems for children and adolescents today, and can cause significant discomfort in the daily lives of the individual and their family. Diagnosis of ADHD is a long and complicated process, performed by experts in the field of child and adolescent psychiatry. There is no cure for ADHD, but several treatment options are available, such as drug treatment, psychosocial treatment and multimodal treatment, which is a combination of drug and psychosocial treatment. Treatment of ADHD is intended to help the individual manage symptoms and shape their environment for the better
In this essay the role of the teacher in diagnosis and treatments of children and adolescents with ADHD will be discussed. Teachers play an important role in the daily lives of children and youths, and it is important that they receive appropriate information and advice about ADHD symptoms, and how they can meet the needs of their students that are diagnosed with the disorder. Research has shown that many teachers do not have adequate knowledge of the disorder to be able to meet the need of their students. It has also been shown that the knowledge that the teachers have, is mainly from their own experience in teaching children with ADHD or from reading and gathering information about the disorder. In most cases the teacher’s knowledge of the disorder does not come from teacher education.
In the past, it was claimed that only children could get ADHD, and that the symptoms would disappear as the child entered adulthood. Evidence shows this to be false. In most cases children will continue to have symptoms as they reach adulthood, although in a somewhat altered form. It is important that proper diagnosis and treatment are carried out from the beginning. If an individual with ADHD does not receive appropriate treatment, it can have great effect on his life. It is therefore important that both teachers and parents of children with ADHD are informed about the disorder, and that they do everything in their power to guide the child through both education and daily life.
