  • This dissetation relates to the responsibility and work of school-bus drivers and their cooperation with the school principals. The aim of the study was to gather data to deepen understanding of the subject, which has hardly been addressed in Iceland. Official documents regarding the work and duties of school-bus drivers were analysed and interviews were carried out with three school-bus drivers and three principles from an equal number of schools; all very experienced in their fields.
The research questions are as follows:
    • What are the roles and responsibilities of school-bus drivers as stipulated by official documents regarding the running of school buses?
    • How do the principals of three different compulsory schools define the roles responsibilities of the school-bus drivers and how do they manage their jobs?
    • How do three bus drivers from the same schools define their roles and responsibilities, what characterises their relationships with the schools and in what way do they cater for the safety and wellbeing of the students?
According to the official documents the job of the school-bus drivers is first and foremost to drive the students to and from the school safely, and implement relevant law, regulations and contracts. The main findings from the interviews were that all interviewees agreed that the school-bus transportation was going smoothly. However the bus drivers felt that sometimes their work was forgotten and not included in the organisation of the school. They interviewees agreed that the role of the school-bus drivers was first and foremost to drive the children to and from the school smoothly and safely. The principles respected and trusted the school-bus drivers and the drivers emphasised to treat the children with respect and have good relationships with them and ensure their safety. The principals where not all in agreement whether they where the managers of the drivers and if they were, they were unsure what power they had over them. On the other hand all of the school-bus drivers regarded the principles as their managers.
