The aim of this research is to work towards standardization of a new Icelandic language assessment tool, MUB (Málfærni ungra barna) intended to assess the language development of children between the ages of 2;0 to 3;11 months of age. The focus of this study is a language sample section that is intended as apart of the MUB. This study compared language sample intended for the MUB to a more traditional language sample as well as investigating the relationship of the language sample with he result of the MUB. The mean length of utterence (MLU/MLS) was calculated as well as the number of different words (NDW/FMO) in both language samples. The language sample section of the MUB assessment uses three pictures that children are asked to describe, followed by a more extensive language sampling with the use of toys in order to elicit spontaneous speech from the child. The sample consisted of 40 monolingual Icelandic children in two age groups, 2;0 – 2;3 and 3;9 – 3;11. The children had normal hearing and were without any known diagnoses of a language impairment. At the end of the MUB language assessment, the extensive language sample was acquired.
The main conclusion of the study includes that there is a strong correlation between the two sections of the MUB assessment; language comprehension and expression, r = 0,92 within the group as a whole (n = 40). The correlation between these sections in each individual age group was fairly good, r = 0,72 within the younger age group and r = 0,65 within the older age group. MLU and NDW show a direct correlation with increased age. MLU in the language samples in both age groups was quite similar, in contrast to the researcher‘s expectations. However, NDW was much higher in the more extensive language samples.
This study gives information which the authors of the MUB language assessment tool can utilize before the final steps in the development of the MUB. The results indicate that the language sample section of the MUB assessment gives comparable results to more traditional comprehensive language samples in terms of MLU. Hence, short language samples, as used in the MUB assessment, can be used when examining spontaneous language development in children at this particular age.
