The action research, described in this paper took place from early January 2013 until the spring of 2014. The paper describes how a teacher was able to enhance the fantasy of her students. The aim of the research was to stimulate the imagination of the students and change the working methods the teacher uses so she can develop teaching methods that can be used to enrich the learning potential of the children.
The theoretical discussion is based on fundamental issues that are connected with children’s imagination. It describes the students´ preconceptions as well as children’s imagination and fantasy. The paper also deals specifically with play, conversation and listening.
The methodological part of the essay describes how the researcher managed to go by her own objectives, how the research developed and went through changes, how the researcher had to deal with challenges, barriers and opportunities. It also describes the data collecting process with the children, explains the data reviewing and the data analysis.
The conclusions are presented in the main part of the paper. The conclusions are classified by themes that rose from the data gathered when analysed. Attempts are made to answer the research question which opens a view into the teacher´s work and the students´ work at the same time. It describes how the teacher attempted to activate the imagination of the students by using the „trio″ in class where play, conversation and listening were integrated into the teaching. Active listening and conversation were systematically encouraged and imagination not only allowed but encouraged because it was a key factor in stimulating students. It also describes the changes that the research process went through in this proactive action research that was supposed to encourage and enrich.
The main conclusions are summarized in the discussion chapter and put into scientific context. The paper also suggests what one may learn from this research. Its main aim was to investigate how a teacher might stimulate the imagination of students with the aim of increasing their interest and making them more active as students. This chapter therefore also describes how the research affected the teacher´s practises and teaching methods.
