In the master‘s thesis The Sea I explore ways in which to develop my professional theory on textile education in Icelandic primary schools by describing and analyzing a project that raises awareness of the issues of sustainability through textile work. The project is a collaborative effort with 5th grade students from the Reykjavik Hjalli Model Children‘s School. The project was a textile workshop during which students were introduced to issues concerning sustainability and nature conservancy while they designed and produced re- usable shopping bags from up-cycled materials. The project‘s objectives were to develop textile education in elementary schools within the framework of Education for Sustainability (EFS). The project was carried out in the author‘s studio, the Grytan, where students collaborated on a design for one side of the bags. The subject matter was taken from the Atlantic Sea, Iceland’s natural environment and the inspiration for the designs were taken from sea life. During lectures and discussions related to the project students were given the chance to learn about and discuss issues of ocean conservation, the necessity of preventing contamination, and the unsustainable harvesting of the sea’s resources. The project was based on the theoretical approach and methods of Education for Sustainability and the strategic framework of Connecting the Dots, as well as the CRAFT process for community based art.
