The purpose of this thesis is to examine how the architects market lies. In detail, to examine how access to customers is for architects workshops and also, to see how their working environment is implemented. This was examined based on location of the workshop, to see if there was a difference in the workshops in the capital and on the countryside. Workload was also examined based on the location. To get to the bottom of this a questionnaire was sent to all architects who are enrolled in Association of Icelandic Architects (Arkitektafélag Íslands) and was living in Iceland. To get a deeper insight into the architectural world, ten architect all over Iceland were contacted and asked further questions in a standard interviews. The standard interviews were content analysis to find a theme. Websites of several architects’ workshops were also content analyzed to find their stories. In order to find out who are their major customers, where their operations are located and what is their market segment. The PEST analysis was used to analyze the market environment of the architects’ workshops.
In this thesis there is a general review about architects and reported what is an architect contests or competition. These competitions are the main opportunity for architects to introduce themselves. In this thesis there is also a report about the workshops’ content analysis and concerning their local community and their far business environment. After that was the market analysis made based on the content analysis and the standard interviews.
The main findings of this research are that the architects do not promote themselves much. They let the work speak for itself instead and they depend on the reputation. The architecture seems to be little known among the general public in Iceland according to the architects. They also say that the general public in Iceland does not understand the aesthetics in the architecture. Almost all participants of the research are located in the metropolitan area. And the most common customers of the architect’s workshops are individuals, municipalities and agencies.
