Titill:
  • Þróun námskrár í símenntun fólks með alvarlega boðskiptahömlun : í ljósi nýrra hugmynda í fötlunarfræðum, námskrárfræðum og fullorðinsfræðslu
Námsstig:
  • Meistara

This study is concerned with improvements in curriculum development for adult students with severe communication difficulties. An attempt is made to answer the question, How can progressive curriculum development help to make the purpose of the education of adult students with severe communication difficulties more apparent? To answer this question, reference is made to the principal ideas of progressive curriculum studies, disability studies and adult-education studies. The object of the work is to further the development of a curriculum of adult education for people with severe communication difficulties so that it may give people better information on the purpose of studying, whilst both reflecting the main points of emphasis in the struggle for equality for disabled people and taking as its frame of reference the fact that the students are adults. An attempt is made to connect the scholarly discussion to practical examples from the studies of people with severe communication difficulties at the Fjölmennt centre and its precursor, Fullorðinsfræðsla fatlaðra.
The foremost conclusion of the study is that efforts to make a bigger part of the hidden curriculum visible and to throw some light on the connection between environment and disability are important for the empowerment of students. Theories of transformative learning; about realms of knowledge other than that of logic—multiple intelligences, the awareness of feelings, opinions and thoughts, and awareness as to how to share them with others (meta–awareness)—give cause to define knowledge and capability in new areas. They also provide an opportunity to reconsider what educational achievement is and how to turn communication, stronger self-image and empowerment into meaningful components in the studies of adults with severe communication difficulties. The argument is also made that the application of alternative objectives together with targeted assessment leads to more targeted study when the subjects are complicated and success is not entirely predictable—which, among other things, applies to communication, empowerment and self-awareness.
