La saga d'Egil Skallagrimsson. Toward A New French Translation

Abstract

Egils saga, one of medieval Icelandic literature’s masterpieces, has been translated twice into French in the past; first by Félix Wagner in 1925 and then again in 1985 by Régis Boyer (both scholars in the fields of Germanic and Scandinavian studies). Unfortunately, the Icelandic saga material has not reached a large audience in the French academic milieu, and has reached an even more restricted audience in the non-specialized readership. After asking why such a unique literary masterpiece has never enjoyed the success it merited, the decision was made to propose a new translation of Egils saga into French. The primary goals of this thesis are three-fold: introducing the historical and socio-cultural context of the saga as well as of the story-plot; outlining the importance and details of the literary translator’s job when he takes over the role of ‘bridge’ between two distant periods and cultures; and presenting seventeen translated chapters of Egils saga from Old Icelandic to French, annotated and commented upon in relation to different difficulties encountered during the translation.

Egils saga er eitt af meistaraverkum íslenskra miðaldabókmennta. Hún hefur tvisvar áður verið þýdd á frönsku, af Félix Wagner árið 1925 og Régis Boyer árið 1985. Báðir eru þeir fræðimenn á sviði germanskra og norrænna fræða. Því miður tókst ekki með þessum þýðingum að ná til víðari hóps franskra fræðamanna og enn síður til almennra lesenda. Þetta stórkostlega bókmenntaverk hefur því ekki náð til lesendahópsins sem það á skilið. Því var ákveðið að ráðst í nýja þýðingu á því á frönsku. Markmið þessarar ritgerð eru af þrennu tagi. Í fyrsta lagi er fjallað almennt um söguna í sínu menningarsögulega samhengi. Í öðru lagi er fjallað um starf þýðandans sem brúar milli menningarheima. Loks eru gerðar þýðingar á sautján köflum sögunnar og vandinn við þýðingu þeirra ræddur.
