Within this final thesis for a B.Ed. degree at the University of Akureyri, during the spring semester of 2015, autism spectrum disorder and teaching methods in preschool for children with autism will be the main topic. The first topic of discussion will cover the disability that is autism spectrum disorder and will later on lead to three different approaches to guiding and teaching an individual with autism. The TEACCH, PECS and TMT methodologies will all be covered, but all of these methodologies, while having the same purpose of improving a child‘s speech and its way of communicating, are all very different and unique.
The purpose of this thesis is to better understand the affects of the PECS methodology on a child in preschool, with autism spectrum disorder and how it can improve its ability to communicate, express its feelings and show initiative. The thesis will cover an observation of the PECS-methodology, which over a period of three months, was applied to try and increase a child‘s understanding, its way of communicating and showing initiative. By this, it was hoped that the child would be better prepared for the objects and assignments of the preschool. The observation was conducted by preschool teachers in Iceland. At first, the child showed a great deal of progress under the PECS-methodology. As further steps were to be taken and the methodology to be applied on a greater level, it turned out that the PECS-methodology was, on its own, not fit for the child. The support of picture cards was then applied and the teachers carried on with a mixture of both methodologies, which resulted in progress with regards to expression, understanding and initiative.
Each individual, with autism spectrum disorder, is different from the other. Therefore, it is very important to respect that it is time consuming to understand the child and to figure out, which methodology and teaching methods should be used.
