In this qualitative research BA paper is based on six open ended interviews with individuals who were born as children of war in Iceland after the World War two. The goal was to have a good impression of people´s experiences and emotions to see if there were some common themes and summarized. This research should provide an understanding of the experience of the Icelandic children of war, their situations and upbringing and how it influenced their character.
The research question is “Did the Icelandic children of war experience prejudice from their surroundings while growing up?” This research should have historical value and give some ideas about the circumstances and well-being that Icelandic children of war lived by, as researches have showed with children of war in Denmark and Norway.
Researches have showed that children of war in Europe often lived by prejudice from children and adults as the whole community, which sometimes lead to depressions and bad health as they became adults. It was examined if the experience of the Icelandic children of war was in any way similar to the experience of the children´s of war in Europe.
The findings showed that the Icelandic children of war did experience prejudice of some sort which had an impact on their mental health and behavioral pattern as an adult. Prejudice against them were not as severe, as ongoing or from as many people as in Europe but they still existed. The interviewers did not have all common experience but there were common grounds and the ones who experienced prejudice did have that in common that the undermined it and did not think of it as an key factor in influencing their character.
