Interpersonal violence is a serious health problem that can be traced to sexual inequality where males are in most cases the perpetrators. Violence can lead to post traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety and chronic physical pain. The objective of this thesis is to address a new mindfulness centred treatment modality where special emphasis is placed on the needs of the victim of domestic violence and how well this modality could serve the needs of female victims in Iceland. The treatment modality in question is defined as Mindfulness Based Feminist Therapy and is based on a scientific foundation of mindfulness, feminist ideology and cognitive training in compassion. This thesis will discuss the characteristics of the treatment approaches that Mindfulness Based Feminist Therapy is based on - the positives and negatives of those treatment approaches are examined and it will be shown how those treatment characteristics can be integrated into a holistic treatment modality for victims of domestic violence. The results of the study indicate that training in mindfulness and compassion helps individuals to build a healthy self-image, increases their self-awareness and equips them to deal with difficult emotions. A feminist approach to treatment succeeds in breaking the isolation that many victims experience and helps them to regain a sense of security when taking part in social interactions. All the approaches that this treatment modality is comprised of have the ability to increase compassion of individuals in question toward themselves. Mindfulness Based Feminist Therapy is based on the premise that this approach is the key to healing. An approach that offers all these characteristics should be well suited to increasing the quality of life for victims of domestic violence and the authors of this study are convinced that there is a need for this approach within the Icelandic population.
