Niðurstöður leiddu m.a.

    Abstract
What is it that we consider most important in school practice and why is it important? In management- and institutional studies the emphasis is on the importance of culture within institutions and the effect that it has on all their internal work.
Since an institution‘s culture is built on the norms, values and basic assumptions that are considered important in each place and at each given time, it is necessary to seek out ways to analyse these factors, with the purpose of better understanding their meaning and impact.
The study here is a descriptive study, a case study, with the aim of searching for and analysing the norms, values and basic assumptions that combined shape the ideology that is the foundation of school practice in one particular secondary school in Iceland, i.e. Akureyri Junior College (Menntaskólinn á Akureyri).
The study uses a cultural model that defines school culture on four levels. At the surface (top level) are people‘s actions, i.e. what people do. The second level holds the norms that control these actions. The third level holds the values that explain, defend and justify the norms and actions. The deepest level (the fourth one) holds the basic assumptions, i.e. a person‘s conviction of what is considered right or true and that is usually unchangeable.
Emphasis will be put on analysing the values, norms and basic assumptions of participants as they appear in the discussion on various important factors to do with the school‘s practises, such as education, upbringing, studies, teaching, students, results, changes/development, traditions and customs. It is expected that the study will paint an interesting picture of the how the participants view their main purpose of the work that they were or are active in creating and/or recreating within this specific time period.
The study is based on semi-structured interviews with 13 individuals that were selected at random from a stratified population in the spring of 2001 and 6 new interviews that were conducted in the fall of 2014. In light of the fact that it is almost 14 years since data collection started, it is also interesting to search particularly for changes in the school‘s culture by analysing the new data with regard to selected factors from the analysis of the older data. The factors that will be examined are mostly concerned with the school‘s role, the teaching methods, changes, results and cooperation.
The results show, i.e. that the personnel’s view of the school‘s main function has changed over the aforementioned period, where students‘ preparation for participation in society is now considered more important than before and even more important that preparing students for studies at a university level.
The participant‘s stance or attitude is in some way marked by their theoretical (academic) background and affected, for instance, their view on the importance of the studies in the aforementioned dual preparations of students and towards their role as teachers. You could therefore see on the on hand, in the school‘s culture, the norms and values that are of the nature of uniting the participants, and on the other hand, norms and values that in some ways had a different definition in their mind. In spite of a will to develop and adapt to changes in outer requirements, a great loyalty could also be seen within participants, regarding the traditions and customs of the school.
