  • Viðfangsefni rannsóknarinnar var að kanna pólskan og íslenskan orðaforða tvítyngdra barna til að leggja mat á stöðu þeirra í þessum tveimur tungumálum. Ásamt því að skoða hversu mikil áhrif nánasta umhverfi í leikskóla og heima hefur á orðaforða ungra tvítyngdra barna.
Rannsóknir sem gerðar hafa verið á þessu sviði benda til þess að orðaforði sé mikilvæg forsenda lesskilnings og undirstaða náms. Því er mikilvægt að kanna orðaforða tvítyngdra barna strax á unga aldri og grípa inn í með snemmtækri íhlutun ef þörf er á þar sem rannsóknir benda til þess að mögulegt sé að efla orðaforða með markvissum aðferðum.
Rannsóknin fór fram haustið 2014. Þátttakendur voru fjórtán börn á aldrinum 4–6 ára (fædd árin 2009–2010) sem fæddust hér á Íslandi og eiga foreldra sem báðir eiga pólsku sem móðurmál. Börnin voru valin af sex mismunandi leikskólum sem staðsettir eru utan höfuðborgsvæðisins í suðurhluta Íslands. Í rannsókninni voru notaðar tvær orðaforða mælingar: íslenskt orðaforðapróf PPTV-4 (e. Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test) og pólskt staðlað orðaforðapróf OTSR (e. Picture Vocabulary Test – Comprehension).

The main aim of this study was to test the Polish and Icelandic vocabulary of bilingual children to assess their development in the two languages. In addition, the children’s home language environments and language development practices in the preschools were investigated.
Literature and research in the field point out the importance of vocabulary for literacy development and learning in general. Thus, it is important to monitor the vocabulary development of young bilingual children and provide early intervention measures if needed. Research has shown that vocabulary development can be strengthened through systematic methods.
The study was conducted in autumn 2014. The participants were fourteen children aged 4–6 years old (born 2009–2010), who were born in Iceland and whose parents’ native language was Polish. The children were chosen from six preschools located outside Reykjavík in the southwest area of Iceland. Two vocabulary measurements were used in the study: an Icelandic version of the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT-4) which has been translated and norm referenced for Icelandic children and a standardized Polish vocabulary test, Picture Vocabulary Test – Comprehension (OTSR). A detailed questionnaire in Polish was given to the children’s parents to investigate the home language environment of the bilingual children. In addition, interviews were conducted with the department heads of the eight preschool departments which were attended by the participating children.
The main results of the vocabulary tests showed that the receptive vocabulary in Polish of the majority of the children was similar in size to that of Polish monolingual children of the same age and gender. On the other hand, the size of their receptive vocabulary in Icelandic was found to be below the average for Icelandic monolingual children. The results suggested that although all but one of the participating children have lived in Iceland since birth, their Icelandic vocabulary is weak. The main findings from the parent questionnaire showed that Polish was the primary language heard daily by all the children during the first two years of life. Polish was the main language used by the children for communication with siblings, parents and other adults. However, the children used both Icelandic and Polish when playing with their friends, but to varying degrees. In all the participating preschools similar practices were used with regard to language development; the main areas of emphasis mentioned by the department heads were reading to children and discussing the stories with them. The majority of the participating children received special lessons with regard to Icelandic language but the intervention was not found to have a significant effect upon their vocabulary development. Finally, the results of the study highlight the need for a vocabulary assessment tool which would assist teachers in addressing the vocabulary development needs of children at preschool.

Picture Vocabulary Test – Comprehension). Do sprawdzenia wpływu otoczenia językowego w domu na zasób słownictwa dzieci dwujęzycznych została zastosowana szczegółowa lista pytań w języku polskim skierowana do rodziców.
Główne wyniki z listy pytań do rodziców pokazują, że wszystkie dzieci przed ukończeniem drugiego roku życia słyszały codziennie przede wszystkim język ojczysty.
