Recognition of Diversity
Insight into the practices of inclusive schools
The schools of the nation are run by the academic policy of inclusive
schools, where the sociological and academic needs of the children are met.
It is the duty of the schools to be able to receive all children and use
practices that are designed to meet the needs of all children. The teachers
and other staff play a vital role in making sure that the needs of the children
are catered too.
The goal of the research was to gain insight into how the education of
children who have a diagnosed developmental disability is conducted in the
youngest grades of primary school. Emphasis was placed on studying the
practices of the teachers, social educators and the teacher´s assistants. The
purpose of the research was to gain knowledge into working with children
in an inclusive school and to motivate the participants to consider the
subject. A qualitative research format was used and the study was built on
interviews with four teachers, two social educators and one teacher´s
assistant. A field study was also conducted in the capital area in the schools
where the participants worked.
The most notable results of the study show that in order for children
with developmental disability to be active participants in ordinary school
activities a strong support system must be in place, the teaching methods
must be diverse and a general acknowledgment of diversity must be in
place. The support system was in the form of social educators and teacher´s
assistants who assisted the children in their daily school activities. The
support system was also in the form of cooperation between co-workers
and instructions from specialists. Diverse teaching methods were found
useful and not only in the school activities of children with developmental
disability but also in all school activities of children in the youngest grades
of primary school.
The obstacles that the participants had to face were in choosing
subjects, finding appropriate subjects and shortage of staff.
The participants were mostly positive towards diversity and the
challenges they faced in their work.
