The ocean and its diverse ecosystem is among earth’s most valuable and important resources. For many nations it is their main source of food and the basis for their industries, and this includes Iceland. In the last decades, especially of the past century, significant increase has been of pollutants into the ocean. Almost all pollutants that are released into the environment end up in the ocean, such as air-borne pollution, effluent or as sewage discharged into a river or directly into the ocean, by for instance the shipping industry. Heavy metals and oil substances have been found in large quantities in port sediments all around the world, including Iceland.
The level of pollution in marine ecosystems can be evaluated with observations of stress in organisms. Biomarkers can be used as indicators of pollution and other physiological compromise of the state of the organism. In this study, which took place in the autumn of 2015, respiration measurements were performed on the green shore crab (Carcinus maenas) held in three different sediment combinations, i.e. in polluted sediment taken from Reykjavík harbour, in control sediment taken at Ósar, Reykjanes, and in a mixture of both sediments. Two hypotheses were put forward. The first hypothesis proposed that the green shore crabs breathe more in polluted sediment than in a clean or a mixed sediment, since they are presumably under more stress. The second hypothesis stated that respiration of green shore crabs is a suitable biomarker for pollution evaluation under such conditions. The results indicated otherwise, so both hypotheses were rejected.
