Titill:

There is great need for a standardized behavioral checklist in Iceland, which can reliably examine children‘s behavior and psychological well being. If any deviations are found, it is important to intervene as soon as possible, to prevent the problem escalating as the child gets older.
The instrument is a new behavioral checklist (CEAS; Children‘s Emotional Adjustment Scale), tested for the first time, for pre-school children aged three to six years old. The list consists of both old and new items, which are considered age appropriate. The list should ideally be able to measure children‘s feelings as a whole, on a continuous scale. Children‘s strengths and weaknesses are therefore both measured with this list. A scale measuring both strengths and weaknesses (SDQ; The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire) was also used for comparison, as it explores behavioral abnormalities in children within a broad age range.
Participants were 277 mothers of preschool children aged three to six years old. They received the scale in an e-mail and answered the questionaire online. The data set was divided into two parts. The first sample (N=127) was used for item analysis, and the second sample (N=150) was used for factor analysis.
The results showed that the items were normally distributed and contained no skewness. The factor analysis suggested three factors were present; temper control, social assertiveness and anxiety control. The three factors were clear and with solid factor structure. The reliability ranged between 0,86-0,95. These results indicate it is possible to use this list in the future to assess children‘s deviations at this young age. To assess the validity further, it is important to test the list again using a larger sample.
