This thesis examines the indissoluble relations between man and space. The essential objective of the project is to shed light on the reciprocal influences that take place within that relationship, and draw attention to the importance of space. Human beings live and exist in space – and that is seen as such a self-evident aspect of human existence that it tends to be taken for granted. On closer scrutiny it transpires that space is a complex phenomenon, which must be explored in a social, historical and political context. I examine how space has been addressed in anthropology: social scientists such as Henri Lefebvre and Doreen Massey have had a major influence upon the understanding of space by contemporary scholars. My quest to approach the relationship between space and man, in which the body provides a direct connection to the world around, is based in phenomenological theories of the body and perception. I connect my discussion with dance, in which the interaction of the individual and the space is manifested in a highly visual and physical form. The potential for moving in a space is key to gaining knowledge and understanding of the surroundings, and orientating oneself in the mutable and varied spaces that inform our existence.
