The research presented here was a participatory action research project in which the researcher guided the research process while examined his own practices. The research is part of the developing project Gaman-saman (Having fun together). The project started in 2009 at Þorpið (The village) leisure center, which is located in the town of Akranes in Iceland. The role of the project is to offer meaningful leisure activities and lead children with diverse backgrounds, including disabled and non-disabled children, so they can explore human diversity and gain new perspectives.
The goal of the research was to create knowledge on the development of inclusive leisure programs for children aged 10–12 and also to gain a new perspective on the Gaman-saman project and give children and youth workers the opportunity to express their opinion and take active part in the development of the programme.
The main part of the study was conducted as an idea workshop, where 40 children and six youth workers met twice a week for four weeks to shape the content and organisation of the programme, explore opportunities and barriers for participation and develop ways of cooperation.
The main conclusion of the study is that developing inclusive programmes is successfully carried out through a cooperative process, where all cooperating partners take an active part, gain new perspectives and learn from the process.
The diversity of the group did not create barriers but on the contrary functioned as a creative incentive, enhancing the participation and activity of all children.
In the research it was possible to identify important factors for participation and cooperation in inclusive leisure programmes, such as creating space and purpose for children to be together; children’s and youth workers’ motivation for the programme and for flexibility and freedom; and the youth workers’ abilities to show initiative, to react to situations, to deal with the unexpected and to learn from experience. The development of an inclusive environment is an experiential learning process that demands thinking out of the box, exploring new fields and confronting challenge. Youth workers have a key function in the process as facilitators.
The main benefit of the study was to develop ways for children and youth workers to cooporate. These ways were introduced in form of a functional cooperation model for inclusive settings. The cooperation model is based on the idea of a cooperative triangle, proposed by André Frank Zimpel (2014), which describes three components in cooperative processes: participation, change of perspective and learning. It was also inspired by cooperation methods used in the Index for inclusion, developed by Tony Booth and Mel Ainscow (2011). It is the purpose of the model to use the results of the research in a reflective, purposeful and functional way for further development, to make them accessible to others who are developing similar programmes. The model is being used and tested in the current program of Þorpið leisure center. It is intended to use the experience and findings of that work to write a manual on implementation of the cooperative model. The authors believe that the model can be of benefit for all groups which intend to develop an inclusive environment.
The article is based on a MA-thesis written by Ruth Jörgensdóttir Rauterberg in social education at the University of Iceland under the supervision of Kolbrún Þ. Pálsdóttir, assistant professor at the School of Education. The title of the thesis is “Everyone can take part. You just have to try.” Children and youth workers cooperating in developing an inclusive leisure program for ages 10–12.
