Evidence suggests that early intervention is crucial to prevent young children‘s mental health problems from developing and persisting. Behavioural checklists are affordable and convenient in finding children in need of intervention.
CEAS (Children‘s Emotional Adjustment Scale) is relatively new and what separates it from most other behavioural checklists is that its statements are focused on normal feelings, behaviours and development and are positively phrased. A preschool version of the checklist is now being developed and this research will examine its factor structure. A previous research study on the preschool version suggests three factors. The aim of this research is to examine whether a stable and clear factor structure can be obtained again in another sample. The three factor structure is expected to return.
Participants were 234 mothers of children from three to six years old. The items were normally distributed and factor analysis suggested three factors; temper control, social assertiveness and anxiety control. The factor structure was clear, stable and reliability of the factors ranged from 0.88 to 0.93. This suggests that the development of the preschool version of the CEAS scale is well underway.
