Shortage of sex education makes teenagers more likely to show risk behaviour when it comes to sex. Sex education in the Icelandic school system is only a small part of the obligated education. Therefore informal sex education has begun to have a great impact on shaping
values and beliefs of icelandic teenagers. With the revolution in technology teenagers have more access to the internet and nowadays it is an exception if a home is without a computer with internet access. This thesis will underline the shortage of sex education and the effect it
has on the sexual behaviour of teenagers. It is not only the schools job to educate students on sexual health. Informal sex education can be sought after in our invironment. Parents play a big role when it comes to educating teenagers about sexual health. Teenagers are very likely
to possess the same values and beliefs as their parents. Parents who provide their teenages with information about sexual health will promote good values which will reflect in teenagers behaviour. Our invironment shapes us as individuals and controls our behaviour. The identity
of teenagers is still in the process of forming which makes teenagers sensitive to the mixed messages sent by the media, their peers and pornography. Porn promotes irresponsible sexual behaviour and teenagers who watch porn are likely to replicate the behaviour found in porn. It
is our responsibility as a society to educate teenagers about the importance and benefits of taking responsibility of their sexual health.
Key words: Sex education, pornography, sexual health
