Titill:

For as long as we can remember, noise and commotion have been a part of children´s play. Where children come together we can be sure to find action and excitement, and children´s play is often associated with loud noises, although the defination of a loud noise can vary by individuals.
The topic of this thesis is noise in the pre-school environment. We will seek to define noise and its effects on pre-school children and school employees. The inspiration for this topic are the worries of a pre-school teacher and other professionals, that children can not fully take advantage of what is being taught in pre-schools due to environmental noise.
The authors reviewed various resources; books, magazine articles, reports and other written material on the subject of noise and its effects on children in pre-schools.
A permission to review and use a few questions from an unpublished research was obtained, the research containing a questionnaire answered by employees from 12 pre-schools in Akureyri in November 2015. Among other things, they were asked questions on noise, hearing, voice health and education on the dangers of noise. Results were diagnosed and compared to the other resources the authors studied.
Research indicates that noise is widely present in children´s environment and that it can have a widespread effect. Similar results are drawn from the research in the pre-schools in Akureyri. Findings show that a lot of noise comes from the children through play and through equipent used at the schools. Some indications point to groups or classrooms of children where too many children are present at a given time. There are also indications that employees produce some of the noise and therefore it is important to look into these factors, including the school´s policy on the subject matter and the „voice culture“ of a school.
Looking to the future, each school has to evaluate their procedures and pay attention to the methods that can improve educational environment of the schools and work systematically to reduce environmental noise in pre-schools.
