The aim of this study is to explore the effects of using Facebook to communicate with parents of preschool children. The goal is to explore whether using closed Facebook groups to mediate footage of pre-school activities to parents, has any impact on certain aspects of pre-school activities. Staff shared posts with photos to Facebook including captions about the activities seen on the photos. The aim of the study was to explore what possible effects this practice would have on preschool practices including communication, teacher professionalism and parent attitudes towards the schools.
This research took place during the school year 2015-2016 and it is a qualitative research that is based on interviews and data from the Facebook groups. Two group interviews took place in a Reykjavik pre-school with seven employees and four parents of children who attended the classes that were involved in the research. The researcher leaned as well on data from previous research conducted in fall 2015.
The results indicate that both the parents and the teachers were satisfied with the use of closed Facebook groups. Its use show an increase in communication between parents and teachers involving their kids study and play. The parents also seemed to be more involved and informed on the work than before and the participants agreed that even more general information should be posted on the groups. The parents state that they even have a more meaningful conversation with their children about their play in school and pay more attention to their studies. The teachers found that Facebook has an effect on their efficiency and cooperation. They find it interesting that they get a new perspective on the childrens´ play and are more capable of studying and supporting the children in both play and studies. Both teachers and parents find it inappropriate that teachers use their own smart phones to record footage of the children and would like to use other means of receiving information. The parents would like to see the Facebook groups continue and would therefore like to see more of the childrens´ activities. The activities have become more visible and receives attention in the neighborhood. The teachers find that they are rewarded for their work and are hopeful that the attention will help positively change society´s perception of pre-school activities.
