Using horn as craft material has been practiced amongst craft people in Iceland through the centuries; both in the context of cottage craft and art. The author has formed a textbook on how to use horn as a working material for Design and Craft education. The work is dedicated to the Icelandic elementary school and practising craft people. The textbook consists of various projects from horn and information on how horns are handled before they are used as a craft material. Then the author, moreover, describes several traditional and historical artefacts made from horn. The work is based on the author’s research within museums, research on the literature of the craft and also uses interviews with practicing craft people about their projects. The project designs, inside the textbook, were based on national Icelandic artefacts that people used in their daily lives through the centuries, and there are also artefacts that the author has designed for the present time. Description of the preparation process is included as well as how to make the projects. Then, the author describes theories on teaching and learning in this context that teachers could base their work on when they are using horn for craft at schools. Moreover, there are suggestions on how the textbook could be utilised by elementary school teachers. Finally, the author discusses the value of practising national handicraft in the present time and makes her conclusions.
