Útdráttur:
  • This thesis focuses on the process of adaptation from novel to film. The first part is about adaptation in general; what needs to be avoided and what needs to be done. Specific chapters address the issue of screenwriting, narration, voice-over, plot and characters. The second part of the thesis on the adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk‘s 1996 novel, Fight Club. The novel is an impelling one and early in the adaptation process it was hard for the studio to find a screenwriter to do the project.
The difference between the two media, novel and film, is interestingly quite extensive. One is written in words while the other is an acted visual medium. Therefore it is not considered a good adaptation if certain key-points are not kept in mind during the process. Many scholars have written regarding adaptation including, Brian McFarlane, Seymour Chatman and Syd Field. These three are the main source for this thesis.
The film Fight Club became very popular when it was released in 1999. Two of the most elite actors, Brad Pitt and Edward Norton played the leading roles and the message of the film is something that most people should consider. The adaptation process was a little bit overwhelming at first since the novel is a first person narrative but the screenwriter, Jim Uhls, took on the responsibility. The director did also fulfill reader’s expectations and the outcome is arguably a masterpiece.
