Útdráttur:
  • Heart patients that undergo open cardiac surgery face a difficult recovery process. Surgery is necessary to eliminate or reduce symptoms of the underlying heart condition resulting in an improved and hopefully prolonged life. The paper is a literature review based on studies and research articles which were gathered from valued databases. The main emphasis is on
anxiety and depression following open cardiac surgery. Anxiety and depression are common health problems in this specific patient group and have a significant negative impact on both physical and psychological well-being. Depression remains an undiagnosed and untreated problem and has been linked to a more difficult recovery process. It is a pressing concern that
patients who suffer from depression have higher post surgical mortality rate. The focus of the paper is on demonstrating the importance of recognizing symptoms of anxiety and depression and why it is beneficial for the patient to receive appropriate treatment for these problems.
