One of the most important assets of a nation is its image. With respect to the fierce international competition of today, the way in which people perceive countries and nations is of utmost significance. This image is of particular importance when it comes to the battle for tourists, export markets and for being an active player in the international field. The Icelandic tourist industry has grown faster than the international one and is a very important foundation in the Icelandic economy. A good and strong image of Iceland is therefore more vital than ever. Many have feared that the image of the country and the nation was damaged as a result of the bank crisis that occurred in the autumn of 2008 and the resulting negative press coverage overseas.
The purpose of this research was to investigate whether the image of Iceland had changed among tourists visiting the country following the bank crisis. For the most part, the research was based on another research conducted prior to the bank crisis, i.e. in the summer of 2008. A comparison was then made between these results and graphically illustrated with the use of perceptual maps. The results showed that the image of Iceland, among tourists visiting the country, remained the same as before. The results of the background questions similarly indicated that tourists were not affected by negative discussions and were generally positive towards the country and the nation. The bank crisis, which led to more publicity and the weakening of the Icelandic krona, affected the point in time at which the tourists decided to visit Iceland for upwards of 40% of the participants.
The main limitations of the research are caused by the proportionally large number of the participants being Norwegian which might have affected the results in some way. The research was in English and individual questions could have been phrased more precisely and offered more reply options. It is also possible that the choice of research field may have led to a more monotone sample. Despite these specific limitations, the research provides important indications regarding the image of Iceland and the perception tourists have of the country after the banking crisis in 2008.
