  • Samkeppni hefur aukist gífurlega á síðustu áratugum í nánast öllum heimshlutum við opnari hagkerfi og er orðin mjög sterkt afl, hefur leyst úr læðingi kraft til gífurlegra framfara og nýsköpunar. Það er mikilvægt hverri þjóð og fyrirtæki að reyna að skilja og ná tökum á samkeppni. Það er samkeppnisaflið sem að mótar stefnu þeirra og stefnumótun krefst þess að þekkja samkeppnisumhverfið.
    Klasafræði leitast við að benda á hlutverk fyrir fyrirtæki, ríkisstjórnir og aðrar stofnanir sem stefna að aukinni samkeppnishæfni. Áhrifin af klösum benda til þess að mikið til af samkeppnisforskoti býr í staðsetningunni í viðskiptaeiningu. Hvernig fyrirtæki keppa skiptir máli í samkeppnishæfni, ekki um hvað þau keppa.
    Í þessari rannsókn er samkeppnishæfni Íslands skoðað í alþjóðlegum samanburði. Markmið er að athuga hvað klasar geta gert fyrir Ísland og er íslenski ferðaþjónustuklasinn greindur í alþjóðlegum samanburði. Rannsókn er raundæmisrannsókn (e. case study) og greining byggist á fyrirliggjandi gögnum og könnun meðal viðskiptaleiðtoga heims í Executive Opinion Survey WEF.
    Komist er að þeirri niðurstöðu að klasar geta eflt samkeppnishæfni Íslands. Ísland getur stuðst við hugmyndafræði klasastefnu við styrkingu íslenska hagkerfisins. Íslenski ferðaþjónustuklasinn er samkeppnishæfur í alþjóðlegum samanburði. Þar eru tækifæri. Aðalaðdráttarafl ferðamanna er náttúra landsins og klasinn hefur alla burði til að eflast.

    Competition has intensified astronomical over the last decades in virtually all parts of the world by more open economies and has become a very strong force, has unleashed a power to enormous progress and innovation. It is important to every country and to every company to try to understand and master competition. It is the competitive forces that shape their strategy and strategic position needs an understanding in the competitiveness of locations.
    The cluster concept and theories represents roles and a way of thinking for companies, governments, and other institutions striving to enhance competitiveness. The presence of clusters suggests that much of competitive advantages reside in the location of its business units. Competitiveness depends on how industries compete, not on what industries compete in.
    In this study competitiveness of Iceland is viewed in international comparison. The emphasis is on clusters as important factor in competitiveness and one cluster in Iceland will be analyzed, the Icelandic tourism cluster. The analyze study utilizes qualitative and quantitative methodology for data and the study is a case study.
    The study shows that clusters can strengthen Icelandic competitiveness. Iceland can use to its advantage the theory of clusters to strengthen the Icelandic economy. The Icelandic tourism cluster is competitive in international comparison. The main tourism attraction is the nature of Iceland and the cluster has every opportunity to strengthen.
