Interpersonal violence refers to behavior that causes physical, psychological, sexual or financial harm in a close relationship. The attitudes of policemen influence their behavior at the scene of interpersonal violence as well as their assessment of the situation. Studies outside of Iceland have suggested that policemen have positive attitudes towards such violence and negative attitudes towards its victims. A questionnaire was answered by 243 Icelandic policemen and 546 Icelandic university students. The results show that the attitudes of the policemen were more positive towards victims and negative towards interpersonal violence than previous research had suggested. However, when compared to university students, the policemen held more negative views towards victims and more positive views towards the violence. It is likely that socially desirable responding influenced the results of both groups. The attitudes of the policemen were affected by the following factors: The sex of the policemen, their age, whether they had seen such violence on the job and how many times in the past year they had done so, their education and main duties on the job. However, their location within Iceland did not affect their attitudes. A low response rate, only 37,52% among the policemen, limits the generalizability of these results.
