The thesis “Í fréttum er þetta helst.” Rannsókn á einkennum íslensks útvarpsmáls [“These are our main stories.” A study on features of Icelandic radio language] contributes to Icelandic linguistics in three ways. Firstly, there is a draft description of the registers of two different text genres in Icelandic radio language, i.e. radio news and radio talk shows. In addition, there are two other important factors: the one is delimiting, interpreting and using a few important theoretical concepts on Icelandic material, and the other is the methology used.
The term ‘register’ denotes here a set of linguistic features which clearly relate strongly to certain language situations and text genres. Radio news and radio talk shows are two out of many different text genres that can be found in the Icelandic speech community. A defining characteristic of text genres is that they serve different functions.
People’s ability to use language in different ways is a prerequisite for distinguishing different usage. When linguistic variation is governed by people’s social background, we have dialectal features. If variation is governed by language situations and text genre we find register features. Language policy and planning attitudes are among the factors which may influence the variation in language use in different situations. In acquiring sociolinguistic competence, people recognise the different kinds of language use which are regarded as normal in the different language situations which exist in a speech community. The social framework for language variation in Icelandic is the speech community as a whole, with its conventions and expectations concerning language use. Our understanding of ‘speech community’ here is that we have a common speech community whenever people are using the same linguistic code, their social attitudes towards language are extremely uniform, and they share the same attitudes towards linguistic variation.
Very often, differences in language use seem to be related to the difference between written and spoken text. A distinction is made between the terms ‘written language’ and ‘written text’, and between the terms ‘spoken language’ and ‘spoken text’. Features of written language, as a register, can occur both in written and spoken texts, and spoken language features may be found in both spoken and written texts. However, the two differents methods, i.e. writing and speaking, do seem to explain much of the characteristics of written language on the one hand and spoken language on the other hand. In addition to the difference between letters and sounds there is a difference in the amount of planning time, the typical situations of writing on the one hand and speaking on the other hand are different, and these two methods are also generally different when it comes to participant interaction.
Exceptionally, a certain linguistic feature only occurs in a certain method (for instance, only in speaking and never in writing), or only in a particular text genre. However, most linguistic features are possible in all situations, so the general rule is that the difference between methods and the difference between text genres lies in different relative frequencies of the language forms in question. Different language use between two text genres may be described by thinking of the genres as opposite ends on a continuum where various linguistic features are clearly more frequent close to one end than to the other end. In the study reported in this thesis, we can think of the text genres radio news and radio talk shows on opposite ends of such a continuum. The difference between the registers of the two text genres lies, above all, in the different relative frequencies of certain language forms.
Radio language situations are of a special character in that you are always ‘speaking to’ an absent listener or giving an absent listener the opportunity to listen to a conversation. The position of such a listener is different from that of an interlocutor in a regular conversation. Thus, radio language is, by nature, spoken text without an interlocutor present. Radio texts are partly based on manuscripts that have been written word for word, and partly spoken without using such manuscripts. When manuscripts are read aloud we may expect to find some features of language use which are directly linked to the writing process.
In radio language, various norms of language and language use in the speech community are presented to a large number of people at the same time. Sometimes it is claimed that language use on the radio can influence the language use of radio listeners. My claim is that such influence can be found in the lexical domain irrespective of text genres, but that any grammatical influence must be much more limited and is probably only possible in the context of closely related text genres.
This thesis describes a study which aims to produce a preliminary draft of a description of the registers of two text genres in the Icelandic speech community: radio news and radio talk shows, as well as considering, in that context, the effect of manuscript use. The research question put forward for this study was the following: Which linguistic features characterise the register of radio news and which linguistic features characterise the register of radio talk shows? This is, then, a study of situational variation in Icelandic language use. The study thus presents and tests a method for revealing the relationship between linguistic features and certain external factors.
The material used in the present study consists of 28,280 words; 10,640 words from radio news, and 17,640 words from radio talk shows. The material from the radio news was mainly scripted (83.5%), i.e., everything was scripted except the news interviews. The radio talk shows material, on the other hand, was not based on such word for word manuscripts. The material was recorded from radio broadcasts in 1995 and 1996. It was written down accurately from the recordings for the purpose of this study.
I investigated the relative frequencies of certain linguistic features (dependent variables) in the text samples from the two text genres. Frequency counts were generally normed to a basis per 1,000 words of text. In choosing linguistic features for this study, I primarily applied the heuristic that the difference between the two text genres, radio news and radio talk shows, could to a considerable extent be connected to the two different methods of text creation, i.e. whether or not a word for word manuscript had been used. I followed various comments and ideas, which had been put forward here and there in the literature, about the characteristics and the difference between spoken and written texts in Icelandic and in related languages. In addition, I used some foreign studies on radio language in particular, as a frame of reference, as well as looking into Icelandic parallels whenever it seemed natural to do so. A few linguistic features were investigated here for the first time, e.g. sound units and the conjunction particle nú.
The linguistic features under investigation are: anomalies (fillings, mistakes, errors), sound units (strings of syllables between two distinct pauses), coordinating conjunctions between clauses, the relative clause conjunctions sem and sem að, the indefinite pronouns maður and þú, the conjunction particle nú, leftmost constituents of clauses (primarily topicalised constituents and the expletive það), ratio between finite verbs and nouns, order of noun and possessive pronoun, idiomatic expressions/collocations. In addition, as a bi-micro-investigation, I looked at the frequency of five words that are characteristic for ‘spoken language’ (akkúrat, græja (noun), pása, redda, sirka), but the material corpus in this study is in fact too small for investigating frequency of open class words (content words). It is obvious, cf. above, that the nature of the linguistic features investigated in this study is quite diverse; some of them are closely connected to processes of speech production, others are of a more grammatical nature, and finally there are those that are associated with use of particular words and phrases. It is assumed here that it is most natural in register studies to investigate such diverse linguistic features at the same time.
The relative frequencies of the linguistic features in question were compared in the light of independent variables concerning 1) method, i.e. whether or not a word for word manuscript had been used; 2) text genre, i.e. radio news vs. radio talk shows; and finally 3) participants, i.e. radio channel employees vs. their interlocutors.
An hypothesis is put forward, and tested, for the frequency distribution of the linguistic features in question, in relation to whether or not a word for word manuscript had been used, and whether the text genre is radio news or radio talk shows. The hypothesis predicts that the following linguistic features are characteristic of unscripted material and radio talk shows: anomalies (fillings, mistakes, errors), relatively short sound units, coordinating conjunctions between clauses, the relative clause conjunction sem að, the indefinite pronouns maður and þú, the conjunction particle nú, the expletive það as leftmost constituent of clauses. Furthermore, the hypothesis predicts that scripted material and radio news are characterised by the following linguistic features: topicalised leftmost constituents of clauses, relatively high frequency of nouns compared to finite verbs, the word order noun before possessive pronoun, idiomatic expressions/collocations.
In this research, an hypothesis for the distribution of a certain linguistic feature, in relation to the external factors, is considered proven if the frequency difference amounts to at least 50% between one external situation and the opposite situation, and if the results are based on at least 283 examples; or if the material as a whole has given at least 28 examples of the particular linguistic feature in question, if all of them have originated in the same type of external situation, i.e. they never occur in the opposite type. If neither of these conditions is fulfilled, the hypothesis for the linguistic feature in question is not considered valid.
The results of the study show that four linguistic features undoubtedly belong to the set of linguistic features which characterises radio talk shows and, at the same time, unscripted material: anomalies, the relative clause conjunction sem að, the indefinite pronouns maður and þú, and the expletive það as leftmost constituent of clauses. Two linguistic features belong undoubtedly to the set of linguistic features which characterises radio news and, at the same time, scripted material: topicalised leftmost constituents of clauses and relatively high frequency of nouns compared to finite verbs. The results also show that in radio talk shows anomalies in language use by interlocutors are more common than by employees. The results of the study do not unequivocally reveal a relationship between the length of sound units, coordinating conjunctions between clauses, the conjunction particle nú, the word order noun before possessive pronoun, and idiomatic expressions/collocations, and any one text genre or any one method, according to the statistical conditions that were chosen for this study.
