    Komið hefur í ljós að vönduð og fagleg lestrarkennsla á fyrstu þremur til fjórum árum grunnskólagöngunnar er úrslitaatriði fyrir velgengni barna í lestrarnámi, ekki síst þeirra barna sem eiga erfitt með að ná tökum á lestri (Hulme og Snowling, 2009; Torgesen, 2001, 2005). Á undanförum tveimur áratugum hafa rannsóknir leitt í ljós að hægt er að fyrirbyggja eða draga úr alvarleika lestrarvanda hjá ungum börnum með viðeigandi, faglegri kennslu. Erfiðleikar barna við upphaf lestrarnáms einkennast af veikleikum í hljóðkerfi tungumálsins. Þá er orðaforði leikskólabarna sterkur forspárþáttur um gengi í lesskilningi síðar meir. Greinin varpar ljósi á mikilvægi þess að bregðast eins fljótt og auðið er við lestrarvanda ungra barna með viðeigandi íhlutun og kennslu.

  • Children who struggle at the early stages of learning to read are at high risk of experiencing long-term reading difficulties unless efforts are made to help them overcome their early difficulties. A substantial body of research over the past two decades indicates the importance of identifying and supporting children at risk for reading problems early in their academic careers and that most early reading difficulties can be preventied though the implementation of appropriately targeted and intensified instructional intervention. The most common area of difficulty among children who are identified as struggling readers at the early stages of learning to read is phonological processing. Vocabulary knowledge at the pre-school and early primary level is a strong predictor of reading comprehension in late elementary grades and throughout schooling. This article throws light on how important it is to respond to the instructional needs of early literacy learners with appropriate instruction.
