The Hverahlid high-temperature system is located in the southern sector of the Hengill central volcano in SW-Iceland. Reykjavik Energy has drilled five exploration wells into the geothermal reservoir in order to study its potential for electrical production, three of them are studied here. The 2000-2800 m long wells show a high-temperature system of 200-320°C below 600-1000 m depth. Lava successions dominate the strata in the northern and eastern part of the field but hyaloclastites are more frequent in the western and southern part. Hydrothermal alteration ranges from totally fresh rocks in the overlying cold groundwater system through zeolite assemblages and into high-temperature mineral assemblages including chlorite, epidote, wollastonite and actinolite. The wells show variable relation between rock- and alteration temperatures, where HE-21 shows good correlation, HE-26 reveals formation (rock) cooling down to 1500 m depth and HE-36 a temperature reversal and cooling below 1300 m compared to hydrothermal alteration. Drill chips from nine wells spread around the Hengill area were used for chemical analysis. Although samples were often highly altered the chemical trend of majority of the samples conforms well with the chemical trends observed in fresh rock of the Reykjanes Peninsula. The sample suit shows a typical overall trend for subalkaline silicic centers in the Icelandic rift zones and covers the the entire basalt range. Results show that the Hengill volcano is primarily a production anomaly of olivine tholeiites but still there are small amounts of evolved rocks much higher then found in any part of the Reykjanes peninsula.
