This artistic research examines the potential for the viewer to engage in a dialogue with works of art.
The project is twofold, on the one hand it is based on a theoretical discussion, where artists methods, used to involve the viewer in creative processes of art making are studied, and on the other hand, a critical examination of my own artistic practice. Dialogical art and Institutional Critique are critical trends in contemporary art that have been specifically
focused on because of the way in which audiences are encouraged to take a critical view of the art world and, be informed participants in society. In this essay I discuss individual works of art, as an example of these practices and put them in context with the theoretical framework. The works attempt to convey both a sense of power, and powerlessness to the audience, along with the possibilities and limitations that the impact of these factors can have. As such the works accept the audience as powerful and responsible individuals.
Examples of my own art work were presented in Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven, Holland, on the 18th of June 2011 and in the exhibition Literacy at the Living Art Museum in Reykjavik from 16th June to 11th September, 2011. The pieces are presented in such a way, that they are dependent on audience participation, in order to be both visible and active.
These works and other works are discussed in the theoretical part of this essay. The two parts, namely academic work and art practice, were created simultaniously and have actively supported each other in a mutual way.
The project is important in the debate about museums and other art exhibition spaces as a place for knowledge but also as an inspiration for all who mediate art in one way or another, whether this be art teachers or artists. With this project my wish is that discussion about greater access to art will not be shaped by a fear of simplification and interpretation, but rather by access as a way of finding the means to ask important questions.
