  • The aim of this MPH thesis is to evaluate the implementation of the preventative program Safe Dates that was implemented in three elementary schools in Iceland. Teachers were interviewed and students in 10th grade discussed their views in a focus group. The emphasis of the discussions and interviews was on the teachers’ familiarity with the subject and their perspectives before and after they taught the subject and on how the teaching itself had been accepted in their opinion. The students were also asked to what extent they were familiar with the subject of violence in relationships and how they did find the preventative program and the teaching of it. The main findings are that everyone agrees that preventative programs are necessary to educate students on violence in relationships and to elucidate what constitutes a good relationship. There were concerns that the course was too long and needed adapting to the 40 minutes teaching hour in Iceland.
The students were mostly content with how the subject was taught and claimed it was thought provoking. They also said that a several points had been raised during the course that they had been unaware of and would be helpful in their own relationships in the future. The conclusion is that a preventative program similar to Safe Dates seems useful and applicable and should be taught in all Icelandic elemantary schools and maybe at other levels as well. It is, however, important to take heed to concerns raised about the need to adapt the program to Icelandic circumstances.
