Previous research has shown that pet ownership and human-animal interaction can have a positive impact on mental health. Furthermore, relations have been found between acts of cruelty towards animals, or having witnessed such, and mental disorders and antisocial behavior. The purpose of this study was to increase knowledge about experience, treatment, and attitudes, of Icelandic university students towards animals. Also, to examine the relationship between these factors and empathy for other people.
Empathy for others is an indicator of social skills and therefore mental health and lack of empathy is also a risk factor for violent behavior. This is a cross-sectional study. Questionnaires were sent to 9336 students at the University of Iceland and 719 students responded. The findings show that 85.4% of the participants owned a pet in childhood and 57.7% in the present days; and that 8.7% of the respondents had intentionally, and without a good reason, hurt or killed an animal. Male participants had more often witnessed and/or participated in killing of animals. Participants who either owned a pet in childhood or lived at a farm seemed to have more empathy towards others than other participants (α≤ 0.05).
Participants who had shown cruelty toward
animals had less empathytowardsothers than other participants (α≤ 0.05). Further research is needed within the Icelandic population that examines the influence of human- animal interactions on mental health. There is also need to examine what affects and meaning animal cruelty can have for the individual.
Keywords: animal cruelty, attitudes towards animals, empathy, mental health.
