vitneskju almennings. Bækur og kvikmyndir afmynda oft það efni sem þær fjalla um en nú til dags virðist umfjöllun um röskunina vera eins nálægt sannleikanum og hægt er að komast án þess að komast í bein kynni við einstakling sem þjáist af henni.

This essay discusses dissociative identity disorder and how it is portrayed in literature and movies. It´s objective is to review the disorder and its impact on the individual and at the same time to see how it is shown in books and other media. The question that is worked from is „What is dissociative identity disorder and how is it treated in books and other media?“
Dissociative identity disorder is a complicated and disturbing disorder that can disrupt the individual’s life and make it impossible for him to unite with the society. There is little knowledge about the disorder but the research that exists has indicated that the disorder is more common than it was estimated to be. There is a great opposition amongst scholars against the validity of the disorder as a real mental illness and this opposition has made research of the disorder difficult and people’s knowledge of it is therefore quite limited. Literature and movies often distort the material they portray but nowadays it seems that the coverage of the disorder is as close to the true nature of it as possible without getting in contact with a person that suffers from it.
