This thesis is a dissertation for a B.Ed. degree in the Faculty of Education within the University of Akureyri. Elementary Schools are a part of the Icelandic school system and it is required by law that they meet the needs of all students, whatever these needs may be. The new curriculum stresses the importance of teachers using diverse methods in order to meet these needs to a sufficient degree. One of the methods teachers use is field trips which are most commonly connected to cultural studies, natural science or sports.
In the past decade, concepts such as outdoor schools, outdoor teaching, forest schools and outdoor classrooms have become more commonplace. Whilst there is variation in their different definitions or methods, they all attempt to create diverse teaching methods for the benefit of all students.
The subject of this thesis is those schools which cater for students who have special needs or who might benefit from versatile teaching methods. The emphasis is upon nature and the environment as a subject in local-based studies . The research question posed was how the methods of local-based teaching can be used with a diverse group of students, both in terms of their age and abilities.
This work revolves around six teaching projects. Different subjects around Húsavík and surrounding areas were chosen. Each project is developed to take between two and six class hours and is connected to a certain subject in the Curriculum of Elementary Schools. Each project can be simplified or made more complicated depending on the students age or ability. Discussion also occurs on different aspects of the environment and how they can be used as an opportunity for teaching within this arena.
