    Abstract
This thesis is a final assignment for a B.Ed.-degree in Pre-school Education from the University of Akureyri. It examines outdoor education and, its connection to learning theories and how it can be used in practice. It discusses learning in general and the Icelandic educational system’s emphasis on play in young children’s education. Theories of the scholars John Dewey, Jean Piaget, Lee Vygotsky and Jerome Bruner on education are reviewed as well as their ideas on the role of play in early childhood education; all these scholars focused particularly on the role of experience in education. Outdoor education connects to these ideas in many ways, but experience is one of the mainstays of outdoor education. The ideology of outdoor education, and how it relates to teaching in general, is discussed. In the Icelandic educational community there is a growing interest in outdoor education and its useful aspects.. Outdoors children get the opportunity to bond with nature, and move freely and unhindered; there everyone is equal, and social relationships are strengthened. The ideology of cooperative learning is a useful in outdoor projects, and contributes to improved academic achievements of individuals through social interdependence. Preschools should seize the opportunities of outdoor education as part of the school curriculum. Outdoor education provides opportunities for teachers to work simultaneously with a variety of subjects and, at the same time, activate the children’s interest in the subjects. In outdoor education the voices of children are relevant, and it is important that the teacher respects their interest when outdoor education is organized.
